Need advices for 4 Gallon Wet Dry Vac
QUESTION: I recently saw 4 Gallon "ShopVac" wet/dry vacuum that was a 4.0 Amp model for $90. Most of the others I have seen
are only 1.5-2.0 Amp models. I have two questions: 1) Does anyone have good/bad experience with "ShopVac" brand? 2) Is 4.0 Amps enough to do most household/garage type cleanup jobs (i.e. fireplace ashes, sawdust, car interiors, etc)?
ANSWER: 1.I'm not sure if you want to hear this, but I'll tell you anyway:
the "ShopVac" brand of vacs are not worth your money.
I've seen way too many being thrown out because the
motors are underpowered and they either rust or burn out.
Please take your $100 and go to Sear's.
Right now, thier top of the line 16 gallon
5 "alleged" peak HP wet/dry vac is on sale and they're
supposed to have all accessories on sale for 10% off.
I've had a Sear's 16gal shop vac for about 10 years now
and it's justified itself many times.
It may be overkill for some jobs, but when the occasional
disaster happens, it won't let you down. 2.The Sear's vac nameplate claims 11 amps.
The Sear's tool catalogue has a table showing how their vac
is faster then the ShopVac at sucking up gravel, nails, water
and has a much better filter.
As for cleaning the car - even using the car nozzle which
really concentrates the suction power, grit sticks in the
car carpeting even harder! Cleaning the car is a real workout.
As for cleaning the fireplace - be SUPER CAREFUL that you don't
suck up any live embers, else the vac'll instantly turn into a
forced air furnace! (just yesterday somebody posted how a live cigarette
sucked into a central vacuum system caused a fire in the bucket/filter).
Sear's has MANY accessories for it, including a rug shampooer,
making it compete with the household vacs.
You can buy the accessories as you need them and there's
almost always a Sear's nearby.
While in the tool department, buy yourself the
earmuff-style "hearing protectors".
The vac is otherwise deafening.
Honestly - I wear the hearing protectors whenever I use the vac
else the din would be unbearable.
PS: should you buy the vac, I'd like to hear your reactions.
The power is awesome - it'll snatch up socks in a flash,
even through the floor nozzle (as I discovered cleaning the bedroom one day).
It WILL suck up Legos and Micromachines given the slightest chance.
Check that bucket carefully as you empty it to rescue
anything that was accidentally snagged in.
