What kind wet/dry vac and Hp?
QUESTION: Having had some problems with basement flooding lately, we've decided to
buy a wet/dry vacuum. There seem to be many brands and models available,
so we're asking for suggestions, experiences, recommendations about
brand, type, size, etc. We plan to use it for general clean up work but
want one suitable for an emergency like our flood.
We borrowed out son-in-law's Sears Craftsman 12-gallon, "4.0 HP Peak"
vac for our cleanup. It worked very well but had two problems: 1. It has a gravity drain spigot with a non-standard thread. That is,
the spigot has to be over something to catch the drained water.
Wrestling a vac filled with 12 gallons of water over my sump was a
character building experience. And the thread on the spigot won't fit a
standard garden house, so we couldn't even siphon it out. 2. It's terribly noisy. Sounds like something out of Hades.
Any suggestions on a good value vac will be greatly appreciated.
ANSWER: Ridgid. Noisy, but powerful and no bags required for dry vacuuming.
4HP is not really adequate for many jobs. Your vac drain is probably pipe thread. Home Depot has brass adapters to
convert to garden hose thread. About $3. I've been extremely pleased with my Shop-Vac QSP. So far I've only
used it for dry pick-up but from its performance with dry I'd think it
would work well for wet also. The QSP series are a lot quieter than
any other shop vacuum I've had. I think Shop-Vac has some models that
can be used a pumps for wet pickup. This would alleviate the problem
of wrestling with a tank full of water.
