opinions on using a 9 gallon wet/dry vac for dust
collection.
QUESTION: I would like to get peoples opinions on using a 9 gallon wet/dry vac for dust
collection. Is it worth it because of portability, or would I be much better
off biting the bullet and going for a REAL system? Does it work OK for some
machinery, but not for others?
ANSWER: As for me, I use my 6.25HP Ridgid shop vac for catching the chips and dusts off
machines. Yes, I manually attach/detach the hose, but I like doing that (for
now). However, I am planning to get one of those boxed air cleaner to put on the
ceiling. Marginal at best ...
Its a vac. it moves air at high speed BUT WITH LITTLE VOLUME
a Dust collector on the other hand moves a HIGH VOLUME of air at a slower speed (you do not feel MUCH the suction) I'm assuming you haven't bought the 9gal vac yet... check here if you
haven't http://www.pennstateind.com/DC1-B.html for about $130 more
than that shop vac is going to cost, you'll get about 850 CFM and
recycled air that is filtered to 5 microns in relative quiet. That shop
vac with about 150 CFM can't match that kind of performance. Besides,
the shop vac's universal motor is going to be screaming like a banshee
in heat when it's running.
