Central vacuum cleaner(Beam or Glaxy) rough in
QUESTION: I want to rough in a central vacuum cleaner(Beam or Glaxy) now while I am
renovating. I do not know what brand to buy. If I just use the piping parts at Home Depot
will they interchange with all brands?
What makes should I look at? I would like one where the 120v is piped from
the vacuum wall outlet. My mom has one where you have to find a plug in for
the power head separately, quite a nuisance, she has to use an extension
cord for one outlet. I would also like to be able to shut the whole vacuum
motor off from the handle. Recommendations?
ANSWER: I recently finished a central vac installation, after doing the rough-in work
three
years ago when our house was built.
Home Depot in my area (upstate NY) carries Nutone equipement, although their
choice of motor units was limited and on the low powered side. I have heard
that
Nutone and Broan have recently merged, also.
Other makers are Beam, Galaxy (sic?) and even conventional vacuum makers like
Electrolux, although I myself bought the NutoneCV 450, a 2 motor unit with lots
of
power for my needs (2 story house, 5 outlets).
Do a web search on central vacuums, and I'm sure you'll find plenty. I think
they
pretty much all work with same types of rough materials, but I would start by
knowing what you might want to eventually finish the job with, and get a hold
of their installation guides, if you can.
I bought some of the materials at Home Depot and a lot at a local electrical
supply house that also carried it. I recommend going this route if you have
questions, it may be worth spending a little more to know you are getting
exactly what you need....you won't get much help at Home Depot, Lowes, etc.,
but you will find better prices (if you can find the stuff).
