What's the best central vac out there?
QUESTION: I want to buy the vac unit (house is already plummed for central vac),
what's the best one? House is 3000sqft.
ANSWER: The easiest way to go is with the brand that matches your "inlets" (I hate
calling them vac outlets)
Other than that, the power units come in either cyclonic (Bagless) or with
bag. Get one that uses a bag if you have pets that shed to any degree, cyclonic
units don't take too well to pet hair.
If you have wall to wall carpet, get an electric hose with an electric power
head/ beater brush. The vaccuum powered power heads don't work as well, but
they're good for low-pile carpet or for a quick pickup. In Canada we had a Sears Craftsman that worked great (They don't sell 'em at
Sears in the USA). Up there you can also get a NuTone system at Home Depot
and put it in yourself (easy since you're roughed-in already) Those aren't
available at HD USA either. Don't know why.
Down south we have a Beam which works good but don't get the "one size fits
all powerhead." Get one that YOU can adjust for height. My house is 2800 sq ft and I have a Scovill Nutone. (Whatever that is. It
was here when I bought the house).
It was put in in 1978 and it is still working like a champ and have NEVER
had a problem with it.
There may be better ones out there. Just telling you what I have. I installed a Nutone a few years ago which I bought at Home depot. I've
since then heard from a contractor friend that installs them that Galaxy
which is made locally is by far the best central unit and he recommends they
install them them with Nutone attachments
I couldn't find a web page but they are at
Galaxy Systems Inc
