Best value Vacum Cleaner?

QUESTION:

Anyone have any opinions on the best value in a vacum cleaner? I'm tired of buying the cheap, poor designs that run about a year or so then die. How about used values?

ANSWER:

We still use a Eureka I bought in 1975. Have been through two hoses and a few other parts, but the unit is still going strong. Getting hard to find bags for it, though.
A few years ago, Consumer Reports liked the Eureka Bravo! so we bought one. Does a great job for about $100 and has lasted about 3 years so for for us.
I've never understood the attraction of $1,000 vacuums. We've been using a $65 Eureka upright for 8 years with no trouble, although we only have about 1,100 sq. ft. of house. We also have a Hoover canister that someone gave me in college, which is more useful for tight spaces, furniture, etc. I've heard people swear by the Eureaka Boss or World Vac models, which have more power. But why spend huge $$$ on a Rainbow or Kirby, unless you have some allergy problem or whatnot?
But if one has an allergy problem, Rainbow comes out last in filtration effectiveness, so that'd be a lousy choice. The reason some people pay more for some vacuums (I did for the Miele) are varied, but all boil down to features and quality. I had several repair places tell me not to get hoover or eureka because of quality problems: belts breaking and other things. They had no interest in what vac I bought. That's not to say they all break down prematurely, but the odds are greater than with a higher quality product. I paid more to get the feel of quality (backed by a 5-year warranty), features I wanted, and filtration effectiveness. I plan to drive this vac into the next century...
