QUESTION: I'm in the market for a new vacuum cleaner....I want to buy one that will
last and do the best job possible. There seems to be so dang many vacuum
cleaners all claiming to be the best one.
Which one is really the best and has the best suction? Thanx in advance.
ANSWER: Now, when it comes to uprights I have a kind of odd view. I volunteered to help
out cleaning a loacl church for a couple years. I went through a lot of vaccums
from yard sales and off eBay. The best I've ever used were Electrolux ProLux
vacuums for commerical use. They still sell that model under a different name
these days. Second to that, the homeowner Electrolux upright that looks like
the ProLux. It's the "sleek" squarish model from the '80s. You can get them
used for almost nothing and they'll run forever. Uprights are my favorite if you have lots of wall-to-wall carpeting. Canister
vacuums are better on stairs, in hard-to-reach areas, and as 'utility' vacuums.
Among upright models, Consumer Reports in February top rated the Kenmore Progressive
with Direct Drive 31912 / 31913 ($330), the Hoover WindTunnel U6430-900 ($300) and
the Eureka Boss Smart Vac 4870 ($160 - a "best buy"). For canisters they liked the
Kenmore Progressive 22612 / 22613 / 22812 / 22813 ($380), the Miele Plus S251 ($425)
and the lower-priced Eureka 6984 / 6983 ($240). We have an Electrolux canister and a Hoover canister. Both have the powered
brushes. Cant' say one it better as both do a very good job. Not having
done a "side by side" with other brands, there could be better, but these
are darned good.
