About Canister Bagless Vacuum Cleaner
QUESTION: As we approach the tail end (I know, I'm looking forward) of winter, I'm
dreading the onslaught of shedding season. I have a GSD/Husky mix, whom
I've had for only one year. So, this will be my second spring with her.
Oh God, I'm dreading this. Don't get me wrong. I really have no
regrets, and would get her, or another dog like her in a heartbeat.
But, the shedding issue is.... well..... an issue. So, a question...
Right now, I have two bagless vacuum cleaners. I have a small Dirt Devil
canister, which is woefully inadequate, and a Hoover upright, which is a
rotten thing to push around. I'm looking to buy a shop vac type
machine. Something that will really take up lots of fur, without using
lots of expensive little bags
ANSWER: When my gang are in the midst of a shed, I give them a good bath with warm
water. Afterwards we go outside and I blow out their coats with a high
velocity dog hair dryer. The resulting cloud of collie hair blocks out the
sun. My collies love the dryer, especially when I blow it against the grain
of the fur. It must feel like a massage. I do this every 2-4 weeks during
the shedding season and there's much less hair on the carpet and furniture. I have four Siberian Huskies. For better or worse, they
don't blow coat at the same time. I burned out a vacuum
cleaner about six months ago and replaced it with the
top-of-the-line Kenmore canister vacuum (lots of expensive
medium-sized bags - one bag lasts about 3-4 weeks). I'm
very happy with the job it does, plus it's got an indicator
on the power head to show you whether or not you need to
keep vacuuming (I think it measures how much stuff it's
currently picking up). I do know someone who runs a
Siberian rescue down south and he uses a Hoover upright
bagless vacuum cleaner that he likes, but he says it can
only do about 1/2 his living room before having to empty it.
