Dirt Devil Canister Vacuum. Hose it too flimsy, quality concerns (shoud I return it?)
QUESTION: I recently purchase a dirt devil cansiter vacuum. The price was right $74 at
Target. It is quite powerfull (13amp) and have great suction. My only
complaints are sensitive power switch and a very cheap flimsy hose. In fact
if I can find a replacement hose for the vacuum of better quality, I probably
will keep it. The problem is, I can't find such a small canister vacuum with
so much power. I keep hearing about the poor quality of Dirt Devil products.
Perhaps some of you can share your positive or negative experiences with the
Dirt Devil Can Vac. Thanks
ANSWER: The Dirt Devil products are made by The Royal Appliance Mfg. Company.
They manufacture both high quality metal cleaners under the Royal name
which are sold primarily through vacuum cleaner speciality stores (vac
shops) and the low price, low quality Dirt Devil product line which is
designed for department stores and mass merchants. Most of their
products, like most other brands, are at the maximum of 12 amps. That
is actually as high as is permitted for UL Approval. Amperage isn't
everything since the overall design of the cleaner is important as
well for maximum performance. All Dirt Devil products have only 1-fan
motors whereas all Royal tanks (canisters) and power teams have 2-fan
motors which develop about 1/3 more suction for the same amperage
rating. Dirt Devil products will typically last from three to five
years before being replaced while the Royal products will last ten to
fifteen years. You always get what you pay for.
One important note regarding Royal and the Web. Royal's new dealer
agreement requires that Royal products not be promoted nor mentioned
on the Internet. My company has been an Authorized Royal Dealer
dating back to the early 60s. To date, we have refused to sign this
new agreement since I feel it is unethical for Royal to try to deprive
the public of Royal product information and prices which is normally
available to the public. Their main purpose for this limitation is to
protect dealers who are charging much higher prices for their Royal
products.
