Take out the filter from central vac
QUESTION: We just bought a house and opened the central vac to clean it out.
Well, we decided to take out the filter, just for grins. Imagine our
surprise when the filter just fell apart in our hands! This vac is
about 14 years old. It is a Nortek VM110. I tried looking for
supplies for this beast, but there was nothing to be found. Anyone
know of a Nortek products supplier who just happens to be carrying 14
ANSWER: I'm not an expert, just and RKI (Reasonably Knowedgeable Individual),
with that in mind I'll take a shot at answering your question.
Good idea. Central Vac filters do wear out, and changing them can
make a big difference in the efficiency of your unit.
Not surprising, as the filter material could simply have dry rotted,
or succumbed to something that the vac picked up in the house.
Have you considered simply making a replacement? You have the old
pattern from the one that fell apart. Many home supply centers sell
filter material in bound rolls, much like what is used in the
industrial HVAC industry for large A/C blowers. I have made many a
filter for A/C, or other uses (vaccum cleaners included) by using a
filter for the same purpose, and then modified with a hot glue gun and
ingenuity. For example, I wanted to put a filter in one side of an
air return duct for a room that was heavy with dust particulates.
This was my hobby room. The space I was using was 16" by 64". I
created a custom filter with Hardware yarsticks (usually free at your
local hardware store) and a hot glue gun. It did the trick. And
worked perfectly.
