Central vac cleaner power ratings

QUESTION:

Does anyone know the equivalence among the differenct ways of measuring air vaccum? I am installing a central vac in my home and one brand is rated 178 inches of water lift, another is rated 518 air-watts and another is rated 3 horsepower.

ANSWER:

http://www.air-way.net/faq.html says that you should find out the water lift of the different vacuums you are interested in, as this is a better measurement for vacuum cleaners. It has something to do with lifting water in a sealed contanier - how high it will lift it, but I'm uncertain on the specifications or dimensions of the device used to measure this
suspect that the purpose of the units chosen is so that you can't compare vacuum cleaners! you're always comparing apples to oranges..
