Need Central Vacuum Accessories
QUESTION: My wife and I are looking into purchasing a central vacuum system. We
have looked for any form of reviews and have come up empty. Our home
was built with all the in wall plumbing and outlets... just need the
"central suck unit" and accessories. Does anyone out there in
alt.home.repair-land have any feedback for us? Anything at all would be
appreciated. BTW, we are looking at a Central Vacuum International unit
or a Eureka. Some guidelines on what to look for (CFM, inches of
waterlift, etc) would be useful.
Thanks for everyone's time.
ANSWER: This was aired some time back on this or another ng. Some people commented.
Both my daughters houses, built within the last 6 to 8 years are equipped
with Central Vac systems..
For what it is worth they don't find them very satisfactory. Both have
purchased conventional canister type vacs and tend to use them !
As far as I can tell the problems are mainly;
a) Weight and length and general clumsiness of the hoses and vacuuming
heads.
b) Poor quality and poor efficiency of the vacuuming heads (powered ones
btw).
c) The central vac. canister has to be emptied within the house, or a bag
removed from the central canister within the house; sometimes a dusty
process! Whereas a normal vacuum cleaner can be taken onto the front step or
deck etc. if necessary to remove and install a new bag. Needed more often
btw.
d) It is virtually impossible to vacuum out a vehicle for example.
e) Also many homes only have a few outlets, sometimes only one or two per
floor! Resulting in long hoses.
Based on what I have seen I would not install one. Rather I would buy a good
vacuum cleaner, possibly, depending on whether you have carpet, a powerful I gotta disagree on most all counts. It appears your opinion is not based on
your actually using one.
We have had our Galaxie vac for about 3 years.
Our 30' hose is as lightweight as a plastic pool filter hose, and slithers
around effortlessly, even up the steps. It does not mark up the woodwork.
The power head is very effective, making the dirt dance to the top of the
carpet. The suction is excellent, to the point of having to be careful
around arm rest protectors, socks, small dogs, etc. ;o)
Emptying ours is very easy, as there is no bag or filter involved. Unlatch
two snaps and the bottom barrel comes off. Put a kitchen garbage bag over it
and invert. No mess at all.
As far as cleaning cars, it is the best because of the powerful suction,
just install an outlet on the outside of the house near the driveway, or in
the garage. We also have an outlet in the basement, very handy for my
woodworking shop. It is easy to add outlets to the system. There is no dust
hanging in the air after a vacuuming session, it is all blown outside. No
vacuum smell, either.
I bought it on line at www.galaxie-vac.com it came via UPS in a few days
with more than enough pipe, fittings, attachments, etc. Installed it myself
in 1-1/2 days. I'm sure that they would sell you just the unit itself.
