QUESTION: I am considering buying a central vacuum cleaner. I would appreciate
comments, both pro and con, on: - central vacuum cleaners in general - specific brands and models
ANSWER: I have installed maybe 2 to 300 central vacuum systems and this is a love
hate relationship. My wife loved hers, now we are in a house without one.
Some people hate them, buyt I say they had one with a leak or not enough
power. Nutone make fully adequate vacs for up to about 3000 sq ft. For a
really powerfull vac, see Modern Days
Silent Master s3 or sv. Really powerfull and quiet. I can get them for you.
I think a vac needs a power head "a carpet tool with an electric powered
beater brush. Also need a hose with the wire built in. This can cost as
much as a reg vac. About $300.00 but worth it after you pay to install a
central vac. Biggest pluses. Noise and exhaust dust in the garage, not in
the house. And more powerfull than any roll around vac. You can get inlets
with the power connection for the power head integrated into the inlet.
Just need to have electrician run wires to each inlet and buy correct rough
in inlet for this. Hayden in canada makes the power hose with the
integrated plug. They also make the inlets.
Anything else, call me or e me. We just moved into our current house about a year ago. It has a
VacuMaid system. I love it. This thing is strong enough to suck off
the proverbial chrome from a trailer hitch! If you are planning on
installing, you need to select which model you want (I don't remember
which one I have; it was the second from the best.) and you need to
do a little electrical planning:
We bought a beater brush attachment that is turbine powered. i.e., it
is powered by the airflow itself. The alternative is to buy an
electrically powered attachment, but it's better to plan on having an
electrical outlet near each vacuum outlet.
Also, don't skimp on the vacuum outlets. Just because you can reach
the whole floor from the one outlet with the long hose doesn't mean
that it wouldn't be more convenient to have a few outlets.
