central vacuum systems-need advices from dealers
QUESTION: Before I continue talking to dealers route, I would appreciate the collective
wisdom of the net on their experiences with central vacuum systems. Our local
dealer is hot on NuTone (guess which brand he installs 8^)! Our house is prepiped
and prewired (Thank God!), so all that is left is for me is to select the best unit
for the money (Would like to keep it under $800.00 if possible) and hopefully
install it myself. If not worthy of bandwidth in this group, I would be happy to
collect and repost the e-mailed opinions. Specificially, would like to hear about the
operational aspects of the netter's use of these (How well does it clean?, what
features are useful, which to avoid, etc. ad nauseam) units.
Thanks in advance,
ANSWER: We built two years ago, and I installed the central vac. The HP Vacu-Flo
brand was highly recommended on the net, and that's what I installed.
Some advantages:
Outside exhaust. Large particles are trapped in the bin, fine dust
goes outdoors. No filters.
Air-powered beater brush. Get a unit with plenty of airflow capability (CFM rating) and this will work fine. No 120v wiring in the hose,
as with electric beater brushes.
On-off switch at hose handle. Low-voltage wiring to each vacuum outlet
controls a relay in the central unit. You don't have to go unplug
the hose at every interruption.
Sold by commercial building suppliers, typically. You can avoid the
"vacuum cleaner salesman" types.
