Nutone Central Vacuum fitting
QUESTION: I am going to install a Nutone Central Vacuum and would like to know if
there is any advantage to using Nutone's pipe and fittings instead of the
white PVC pipe of the same size. Home Depot stocks both, but the Nutone
stuff is more expensive.
Is the White pipe/fittings more susceptible to clogging?
Any knowledge/Info/Experience you could pass along would be very
appreciated.
ANSWER: My understanding is that some of fittings (esp. T-fittings) are engineered
to prevent clogs in the central vac components. I recommend you stick to
the Nutone components. Vacuum pipe is made of PVC and comes in special fittings for vacuum use
only. Plumbing PVC pipe comes with special fittings for plumbing use only.
Don't mix the two, use proper vacuum pipe and fittings, as the outlets and
vacuum motor units are designed to work with them. There are a number of
manufacturers who make vacuum pipes and fittings, Nutone brand will not
necessarily be better than anyone else's. I would use the one that has the
fitting shapes that you need for your installation, or the best price. Try pricing a Nutone install kit from a supply house (Electrical supply house)
rather than buy the parts a-la-carte from the BIG ORANGE BOX. It will contain 100-150' of pipe, and various elbows, t's and inlet points. Also the exhauset
and muffler. MUCH cheaper than piece-by-piece. If you need more of this and
less of that, the supply house will probably be willing to accomodate, and
you'll also be able to "touch base" with people who are very familiar with the
product line, not some pimply-faced high-school kid or college dropout who
doesn't know jack about your project.
