Questions about Central Vacuum Hose
QUESTION: I would like to install a central vac in our house. It's a one story
house so I can install the piping in the crawl space below.
Does anyone know a source (especially online) of information or
supplies about these systems? I'd like to know what pipe and fittings
to use. Actually, I'd really like to use standard PVC pipe and
fittings and find a source for the fittings that will be visible in
the house, where the vacuum hose connects.
Second, can I use a standard shop-vac for this project? I have one
that gets virtually no use.
ANSWER: I think you should look to the companies that sell systems. they are
user installable, and will save you some money. You can pretty much forget using standard pvc, abs, etc. The vacuum
equipment uses a slightly different size pipe. My recommendation is to go
with Nutone. The other manufacturers appear to sell strictly through
installers and when you buy equipment, i.e. pipe, fittings, hoses through
them it is quite expensive. You can buy Nutone over the web. I think they
have a good product for the price. Here are a couple of good sites for
parts and equipment.
