Central Vacuum

QUESTION:

We're building a new house and my wife is interested in installing a central vacuum system. Does anyone have experience with them? How well do they work? Are they better overall than the upright or tank models that you store in the closet?

ANSWER:

There's no good reason to have a central vacuum system. It's much more expensive than a regular vacuum and doesn't do anything that a regular one can't do. Having said that, I would still recommend it, primarily because the not-so-good reasons can sometimes be quite compelling. For me, the most important feature is that you don't have to listen to the noise. If you have a small dog around the house, a vacuum cleaner is going to be very intimidating. When I was a kid, we had a dachsund, and my mother used an old Hoover, battleship gray steel, that made a roar you could hear for blocks. In size and shape, it essentially looked like an armored dachsund. The poor dog went into a panic whenever she dragged it out.
The other thing to keep in mind is that it's a lot easier to install a central vac now than after the house is built. Even if you decide not to go with it, you should at least have the pipes and wiring put in - and don't forget to have them install an outlet where the cannister would go.
