ANSWER: I don't mean to add a twist to this vacuum discussion, but have you
ever thought of a wet/dry central vac system? I never knew these were
available (residentially) until I recently saw a demo at a local home
show.
They are a little more pricey, depending on features (you can get ones
that are self flushing, so you don't have to empty the water once it's
full). But if you have the need to clean wet spills regularly, or rent
those carpet cleaner machines a couple of times a year, this sort of
central vac might be for you.
