Anyone had problems with there dyson vacum cleaner before?
QUESTION: my dyson dc01 vacum cleaner has stopped working and after checking the
obvious fuse is ok and on/off switch test out ok with a simple electrical
test meter for continuaty so I delved a little deeper and took the motor out
the carbon brushes appear to be ok and there is no burning smell in the
motor we also have continuaty when testing the contections of the motor too !
Any hints tip or good advice would be much appreciated
ANSWER: Did you start at the plug with the continuity tests ?
What sort of tester are you using ?
That is to say does it read low ohms or use a lamp bulb of some kind ?
One of the major faults in such things is a broken conductor near where the
cord enters the handle. By Murphy's law it will be made when you test it so
it pays to move the cable around whilst testing.
If you are getting continuity across the motor it likely is OK since a burnt
out motor will usually smell bad !!! Agreed the most likely fault is broken cable where it enters the handle.
This is where the problem was on the Dyson I repaired. You may want to
just cut the cable off six inches before it enters the handle and
discard the short length in the machine. Use the remaining length to
effect the repair. Probably not even worth trying to test the cable, as
they always seem to work until you plug the thing in!! Don't wiggle it
about with the mains on to see if the motor will run, you could get an
arc in the cable which punctures the insulation and burns or
electrocutes you.
