Dyson Vacuum question

QUESTION:

I was looking through the archives of RTCN and saw your post on purchasing the Dyson Vacuum at Costco. Did you buy it? What do you think about it?
We have to Siberian Huskies who shed quite a bit.....and I was thinking of replacing our hoover vacuum with the Dyson that is Costco.

ANSWER:

I'm not Ellice, but I've got a Dyson and a Lab/Dalmation mix breed that got the shedding gene in spades from both sides... I love it. It still is not a "one pass" vacuum, but, unlike my old bagless
(Windtunnel II), I can actually vacuum my entire family room in one or two passes (depends on how long I've let it go, and how much seed the bird has scattered all over the floor). With the old machine, it would have been at least a dozen "emptyings". Another nice thing is how the tank is emptied. With the old Windtunnel, you had to flip a switch, remove the top, turn it upside down over your trash bin, "tap" (closer to slam, IMO) the sides to "encourage" the dirt and dust to fall out...usually end up dumping the filter into the trash bin at least once...*sigh*..decide the filter needs to be "tapped" as well....sneeze my way through the cloud of dust all this tapping has caused, reassemble the tank unit (ie, reinsert filter, put lid back on), reinsert tank into machine and move locking switch back. With the Dyson it is sooooo easy. Depress one unlocking switch, take entire tank unit to trash bin, hold tank over bin and pull a second trigger switch. The entire bottom swings off on a hinge and everything in the tank just falls down into the trash bin. Barely any dust escapes. Swing hinged bottom back up and snap tank unit back onto the vacuum. We just got the basic Dyson (the yellow one). The only real difference, besides color, between it and the pet model, is the pet model comes with the "turbo attachment" (the little hand held, air powered, rotating brush nozzle). We were told the turbo tool we had from our old windtunnel would work on the Dyson. We have not yet tried it, as the windtunnel has been residing at our old house so we could run a vacuum over the carpet while it is on the market.
I`ve had a Dyson for YEARS and two dogs (Cavaliers, who are great hair shedders!) and can swear by it - am thinking of buying a newer model, but the old one keeps going strong! You`ll find that the SLOWER you push it, the better it cleans - and you can both see where it`s been and what it`s picking yup. Very satisfying!
I'm also a lurker in this newsgroup but wanted to praise the Dyson. I have the purple one and love it! My only complaint is it has too much suction for the floor tool :-( I only use it on the carpets. I bought mine from Ebay last November. I think it's a good investment IMHO.
