Electrolux Canister Vacuum Cleaner

QUESTION:

Is there such a thing as a reasonably priced upright vacuum cleaner that actually works well and lasts a long time? Or is a canister vac always best? Just want to clean a 1700 sq ft house with mixture of carpet, wood, and vinyl floor coverings.
I have an old Electrolux upright that used to work really well about 15 years ago when I received it as a gift. Had it "rebuilt" a couple of years back by an authorized dealer, but I didn't think it ever really performed as well as it should afterward. I'm a bit reluctant to spend the big money on some of these names like Rainbow, Kirby, Electrolux, and so on. They may be good, but are they worth the money? I have some doubts.
About a year and a half ago, I bought a Dirt Devil whirlwind type bagless upright with the filter in the middle of the dirt cup, and it has been a disappointment. It don't do as good of a job as I had hoped, the attachments seem a little cheaper, and it makes as much noise as a jet engine. Almost need earplugs to use it.
Looking for experienced suggestions. Thanks in advance.

ANSWER:

I don't think there's a more powerful upright vacuum on the market than my Hoover Windtunnel Self-propelled (appx. 300/350.00). It has a lot more suction than my old Hoover PowerDrive Supreme--But, it *is* loud and pretty heavy. It can also be dangerous if you have toddlers--it tends to tip over a lot when using the attachments and it does not power off when it overturns. I bought this vacuum after having 2 PowerDrive Supremes with broken fans (they work so well, I bought them anyway). The Windtunnel had a design change and the dirt
(and occasional penney) bypasses the motor. It also has an automatic shut-off if it gets too warm due to some kind of restriction--like when the bag is too full or the belt is slipping. Great feature! I've had it about a year and it has shut off on me twice. It restarts when it cools down--appx. 15 minutes.
