Hand Vacuum Cleaner Advice?

QUESTION:

I need to purchase a hand vacuum cleaner. I usually go to Consumer Reports for advice, but they haven't tested them since 1992. Where else can I go for recommendations? Or do folks here have opinions?

ANSWER:

They all suck and not in a good way that vacuums are supposed to. What will you be using it for? We've gone through three hand vacs, two of them rechargeable and one corded. The cordless ones are useless junk, but the corded could be used for occasional small jobs. I'm too tired to go upstairs to check what the brand is right now. I will, if you're interested in corded models.
I bought my Black & Decker 9.6v Dustbuster at their factory outlet. It's stronger than their other models and has useful attachments such as a soft brush so it doesn't scratch the wood table or floors and it's great for really dusting. The Dirt Devil "Dust Devil" was mostly useless: very little suction power and the product inside did not match the box. The box shows a soft rubbery edge so it shouldn't scratch things and a pleated filter for greater suction. The one I got was just hard plastic, no edge guard and a plain cloth filter. I also have a Sharper Image vac/steamer but it's a hassle wrangling with the cord. Whatever you get, insist on a brush-nozzle so it doesn't scratch!
