Home Central Vacuum Systems
QUESTION: We are building a brand new house and are considering
installing a home central vacuum system. Does anyone have
any experience with any and are they worth it? Are
there some brands/models that are better than others?
Are there some we should stay away from? Thanks.
ANSWER: We moved into a new house last July. So my wife has a central vac for
the first time in her life. She's never going back. She loves it. It
has more power than her previous vacs, and it takes the dust *away* from
her. She would say that if you can afford a few bucks, at least put the
piping and outlets in for the vac. You can put the actual vacuum in
later if you have to.
I think the brand we have is a Fasco. It's worked fine so far, but
obviously no real reliability report. Do get the power hose with the
switch on the handle. That will mean you need wires run to each outlet. Can't advise on this. But I have wondered...are there problems with static
charging in the plastic pipes used? I know that in woodshop dust collection
systems, the rushing air will cause a static charge to build up in plastic
pipe. If it's not grounded properly, risk of explosion is dangerously high.
This is why metal ducts are used in woodshop dust collection systems. I built a home 10 years ago and installed a Nutone CV353. Very happy
with it. But, I wanted more.
We moved into a new home last October. While it was being built I
installed a CV450. Two motors, and do you ever know it! A *great*
product.
In my work I have come across several other types of central vac (the names escape me); none as good, imho, as the Nutone CV450.
Good luck,
