Central vacuum in flat roof home?

QUESTION:

Anyone have ideas or experience regarding the installation of a central vacuum in a home with no attic? Best thing I can think of is running the pipes in the HVAC ductwork (located under the roof) or on the roof.

ANSWER:

I had to run a central vac pipe up to the second floor of our 90 yr old house thru a duct. It works fine. If you get the outlets with the electric plug built in (recommended over the pigtail plugs), install them with the electric pins on top, it is much easier to align the pins when you plug in the hose. Remember that the hose is usually 30 ft long, and cleans a 60 ft diameter circle. I needed only one outlet on each floor. Running them right on top of the roof seems like it would work if its hidden from the street, and would be a lot easier than shoving 2 inch pipe thru ductwork, glueing fittings, etc, but you might end up with a lot of water leaks where you have to go thru the roof. Is there room next to the ducts?
