where do you install your central vac?
QUESTION: I posted here earlier looking for a handyman to reroute my central vac
piping from basement to garage. Then today I made a new discovery while
talking to a store expert. He suggests not to install the central vac
in the garage unless the garage is heated! for the simple reason that
because of cold winter time, the cold air will create condensation
inside the unit, hence rusting and damaging the machine over time. I
think the guy has made a good point there. What do you guys think?
ANSWER: Humid air drawn from the house through pipes and a unit located in
an unheated space is asking for condensation issues.
Maintaining the central unit in an unheated space in the winter won't be
fun either. we're getting central vac installed
this week; (I definitely don't want to go through the rigamarole of running
the pipes through all the existing drywall, so it's well worth the
installation charge)
I'm having the cannister put in the same room off the basement as the hot
water heater. The sales lady said that if the noise bothered us (and it
shouldn't, given the newer ones are quieter than running an upright in your
living room), a well ventilated, insulated enclosure can be built around
the canister to reduce noise.
