QUESTION: Some college kids came to the door, offered a free car
vacuum if I let them demonstrate a kirby vacuum by
vacuuming one room of my house. I figured if they are
casing the joint, the living room is safe; so fine,
have fun.
He vacuumed a small patch of carpet, and the results
looked impressive, compared with my hoover upright, it
even picked up paper clips my hoover sometimes
doesn't. But I didn't care because I hope to put in
floors soon.
After half an hour I asked how long the demo would
take. He shrugged. I said, "half an hour? Two
hours?" He shrugged. To me that non-response meant
two hours or more, so I asked him to leave, saying I
had not intended to give up the entire afternoon.
They left me with the car vacuum, which they could have
taken back, since it was right on the front table.
My question - in case I don't put in floors - is Kirby
a good machine or was it a fake demo? Does it cost a
comparable amount to other brands, or is it more like a
thousand dollars or something wild?
I just assume anything sold door to door is extra
expensive.
ANSWER: The Kirby is highly OVERrate and OVERpriced. Period. Ditto for the Rainbow. Spend the same amount of money (maybe even less) and get a built in vacuum
system. If I'd known how easy they were to install into existing
constuction I would have installed one in my first house (bungalow with
unfinished basement)... better to throw the dust outside instead of out the
back of a machine (I have dust allergies).
When someone asks me how much the built in vacuum system is I always tell
them: Less than a Kirby.
