QUESTION: I am not in any way a fireworks expert, just a spectator.
Now that the 4th has come and gone I want to ask questions,
for starters, is there such a thing as an M-120?
When I was a kid all we had were silver salutes, cherry bombs
and M-80s. In a July 3 report on CNN they mention an M-100,
and equate it to a quarter stick of dynamite. A friend at work
here says he heard something on an L.A. radio station where
they mentioned an M-120. What is that? Are the M-100's and
M-120's (if they exist) some kind of home made thing? I never
heard of an M-100 until this year.
And what is the upper limit? Is there something higher than
the M-120? What are these "M" ratings, anyway? What is the
"M" rating for a whole stick of dynamite?
As you can see I know nothing, so please chime if you know
anything.
Thanks!
ANSWER: Yes, and no. The M-80 was a mil spec firework. Once those were outlawed,
a lot of people tried to cash in on inexperienced purchasers and
advertising hype. So they created the M-8, M-60, M-100, M-120, and M-1000.
Of course, unless these are illegal fireowrks, they are all the exact same
thing, about 65 mg of flash in larger or smaller cardboard tubes.
Sure, pack 65 milligrams of flash into a tube the size of a dumpster, and
call it a M-billion.
