Orek vacuum, has anyone used one?

QUESTION:

I always see this advertisement, either on TV or in a lot of magazines, its about an Orek Vacuum and I wonder has anyone ever used one? does it REALLY work better then your average vacuum? what do you if it breaks down?

ANSWER:

I bought one a few years back, and I was not impressed. Oh, it was light, and it did pick up a fair bit of dirt, but it wasn't fantastic. More revealing was to delve into the instructions and look at the exploded parts diagram. Seems as though the ONLY air-moving apparatus on the thing is the beater bar. In other words, the beater bar spins *really* fast and that's what pushes the air up into the bag. No impeller or other air-moving parts... no *wonder* the thing didn't seem to have good suction! I'd classify it as more of a turbo-charged carpet sweeper than a vacuum cleaner... These days I have a central vac for most stuff around the house
(allergies, y'know) and a secondhand Kirby for the occasional deep-cleaning of the rugs...
I suggest you get a Consumer Report review of vacs. I believe any issue has an indew to previous issues and their articles. I seem to remember that CR found Orek wanting, to say the least
