Anyone have DIY Pool Vacuum Plans?
QUESTION: I would like to build a pool "vacuum" that I can use to get the larger
leaves and dirt that have fallen to the bottom of the pool before running
them all through the filter/skimmer. Any ideas? I figure a simple vacuum
shouldn't be too difficult but I am not sure where to start.
Basically I want something like a "shop-vac" that will suck the dirt and
leaves and return the water...
thanks in advance for any ideas/plans/sites/whatever
ANSWER: I'm totally missing the point of doing what you're proposing...I use the net
for the big stuff, and vacuum with my pool vac...empty the strainer basket,
and rinse my cartridge off when I'm done...that's what all the pool cleaning
accessories are for...seems like bringing a shop vac out and still needing
the hose etc, is a bunch more work.. This is something I've pondered on the 2 or 3 times that I've let my pool
become a swamp in the off-season. Never came up with a viable solution, but
I did talk to a couple of rental companies about pumps and without admitting
exactly what I wanted to do, they told me that in order to pump out a
"sludge of dirt, mud, and leaves" I'd need a diaphragm pump. Not being a
subject matter expert on pumps, I took a look at a few web sites and
determined that diaphragm pumps are what the telephone and power companies
use to pump water/sludge/mud out of man/hand holes. Lot of "torque/power"
relatively low volume, but high pressure. They'll pump out anything but they
require a lot of power and a lot of patience. From what I read, I couldn't
come up with a practical way to apply the information to a residential
swimming pool. There are companies that'll come out and do the Leaf Master
thing, but I was never willing to let one of them come out and see what a
mess I had let my pool become.
If you come up with a way to build something like this, I'll be very
interested. In the interim, I'm going to count on my personal sense of
shame to prevent me from letting the pool get that bad again.
