QUESTION: I am looking to by a portable vacuum to keep in my 323. I want one that
has a cigarette lighter attachment, so I can run it from the car
battery.
Any recommendations on the best one to get?
I am looking for a good quality one that will last.
ANSWER: IMHO, they're of little use. A reasonably powerful domestic one will have
a 1000 watt motor. Car ones are perhaps 50. So don't expect it to lift
much more than cigarette ash - and only if you can get right to it. I got one from Wal-Mart couple of years ago for $20 or so. An "MVP
SuperLine Auto Vacuum A7-3021". It has a second motor for the power
brush. I've used it quite a bit and it's still in top shape. It
actually does a lot more than Dave Plowman said however, I agree with
him. When I get a chance I use my friends' 5HP ShopvVac for serious
cleaning If it has a power brush I'm sure this helps, as it's the vacuum
that's restricted by the limited power. I've not seem these over here.
Still, in general they are so cheap that it's not much money to waste if
you're disappointed in the performance.
I've got an old Rowenta wet and dry machine I bought on the recommendation
of Which? our consumer mag - I use it for things I don't care about, not
cars. And its been great for cleaning the workshop and cars as well as
clearing up round the house after DIY works. I put a waterproof power
socket outside the front of the house to make using it more easy for car
stuff.
