Q: What is state of the art in robotic vacuum cleaners?
QUESTION: I'm a M.Sc student in Engineering Cybernetics and I'm planning to do a bit
of research into robotic vacuum cleaners. But before I do this I'm trying to
find out what's around today. So far the only commercial robot of this kind
I know of is made by Electrolux. Does anybody make or do research on these
kind of robots? How big are they? What kind of algorithms are used, and what
limititions do these have? Are these robots robust? Do they make maps of the
rooms they are cleaning? What kind of sensors do they use?
Basically I would appreciate as much information as possible on robotic
vacuum cleaners in the labs and factories of today.
Thanks in advance,
ANSWER: search the electrolux websites both uk and us, one had a animation that
showed the mapping procedure..
Here are some online reports.
"An Architecture for a Synthetic Vacuum Cleaner","R. James Firby"
"Making a Clean Sweep: Behavior Based Vacuuming","Douglas C.
MacKenzie, Tucker R. Balch"
"Sweep Strategies for a Sensory-driven, Behavior-Based Vacuum Cleaning
Agent","Keith L. Doty and Reid R. Harrison"
"Vacuum Cleaning Robot","Nuno Gomes, Joaquim Ferreira"
Search for the titles or authors. They are all available online at
various locations. If you can't find them, I can send them to you.
