QUESTION: We're trying to "spec out" an RV (Newmar Mountain Aire),
and saw an article about central vacuums in a magazine.
Can anyone relate good or bad experiences with them?
I'm mainly trying to decide between that and something
like a dirt-devil with attachments (or an Oreck tank-type),
and wondering if there are any problems with a central
vacuum reaching all areas (including the ceiling). What
about basement storage compartments?
ANSWER: We don't have a central vac in our RV, but do have one in
our house. The advantages are: more powerful motor for more
suction, and venting of all dust to the outside (our motor
and canister are in the garage). I believe I read the
article you are speaking of, and I recall wondering why the
thing wasn't vented to the outside. More trouble to do it
that way, I guess. A disadvantage of the unit in the article
appeared to be the lack of a beater bar on the carpet
attachment. Even our little hand-held Dirt Devil has a
powered beater.
