Dusting with a vacuum vs. Swiffer vs. cloth

QUESTION:

I would like to get your opinion about dusting using vacuum attachments vs. a Swiffer, vs. a lambswool duster. We have mostly hard wood floors and I'm wondering if I'm doing a disservice to my house by just using the vacuum instead of using the oldfashioned hand dusting method.

ANSWER:

I'd have to disagree with you Brett. Have you ever used a Swiffer? I love it. I have Eight cats and two dogs. I used to haul out the vacuum at least once a day. Swiffer DOES remove the dust and it's light and easy, reaches high up and goes under almost anything. I have no stock in the product, but I wish I did.
It depends on your vacuum. I have a rainbow that is like a dust bong--the dust gets sucked into and captured by the water, and you essentially pour out mud. So vacuuming is very efficient. When I had my old HEPA filter vac I had to dust more regularly, after I vacuumed and the airborn dust had a chance to settle. Now I dust with the vacuum and its attachments and then an hour later I go through the rooms with a Swiffer to get any settled dust and those nooks and crannies the round attachments won't get back into. I never liked a lambswool duster because I was never sure what happened to the dust. Those things last forever, but I never took the dust off of them, so what happened to it? I think they are great for quick touchups when I don't want to drag out the vacuum, or for places where there are a lot of details or ornamentation, but I didn't want them for day to day usage. I don't have wood floors (we've been renting for way too long), but I would like to see what the swiffer does with them. I *think* I'd vacuum to get up the chunks (if you have kids or pets you understand), then go over it to "polish" with the swiffer.
