Tristar Vacuum cleaner demo
QUESTION: I'm currently working for a Tristar cleaner supplier in Edmonton. We supply
a one of a kind unit and are currently running in-home demos in the region.
We demonstrate the severe health risks associated with conventional vacuums
and show you our product in action. I would definitely encourage everyone to
take advantage of this demo, especially if you are in the market for a new
vacuum. Even if you're not in the market, the demo is worthwhile to see
just to get informed on the health risks of conventional vacuums. If anyone
is interested in a free demo, please e-mail me back or reply in the
newsgroup.
Thank you,
ANSWER: I had a Tristar rep put their foot through the door a couple of years
ago. They promised all kinds of wiz-bang with their $2200 (?) vacuum.
Having a central system, I really had no interest, but the S.O. wanted
to have a look. So as soon as the rep drags their rather familiar
looking beast in, they start talking about how good it is over our
central and every other vac on wheels.
One of their pitches is about how much suck it can do with a load of
sand filling its dustbin. I kick open a closet door and reveal a 20+
year old Compact (old name for Tristar) that looks exactly the same,
except mine is puke robin's egg blue and his is this funky
silver-speckled paint job. I say to the rep, 'hey I'll bet my antique
Tristar can suck just as well as your new vac with the same load of
sand'. The guy, being new on the job (like Gavin probably), gets
flustered and calls his boss. His boss tells him to say that their
new one can do the full sand bag test and mine, being antique, won't.
Of course, today only, being a owner of an existing Tristar, I can get
a real deal - $400 off ( IIRC) towards trading in on the new model.
The rep gets off the phone after telling me that and a few other
obvious fibs. I say - 'so lets give mine a try'. We pull the the
sand bag demo out of his and drop it directly into my old Compact
beater. Surprise! Same performance - no difference. Now the rep is
embarrassed big time - his boss lied to him. I'm sure he didn't feel
much better when I told him we had the Tristar for several years, and
we bought it used for probably no more than $200.
True story. Sorry to rain on your parade Gavin. Selling over-priced
vacuums seems to be only a game for those with no conscience and naive
new salespeople that believe everything they are told. Nothing
against you personally Gavin, but it is employers like yours that seem
to delight in taking the elderly (or naive) who don't have anyone
looking out for their affairs.
BTW Gavin, just an FYI, the claim that Tristar makes that they have an
effective HEPA filter on the thing is a distortion of the facts ... do
some research on HEPA filters - what they are and what makes an
effective implementation. If I still had that old Compact vac, I
could turn it into a HEPA-equipped model, just like yours, just by
purchasing a replacement "HEPA-rated" clamp-on filter from the Tristar
dealer.
