QUESTION: I have to replace my vacum cleaner - prefer a canister type. What is the best
vacum, in your opinion. More concerned with performance than cost. Interested
in opinions. Thanks much!
ANSWER: We have a site with over 100 pages about vacuum cleaners which you may
find helpful. Various types, designs and construction aspects are
described as well as performance aspects. The latest page at
http://www.ristenbatt.com/dustmite.htm discusses dust mites and steps
to reduce exposure to the allergen they produce.
Personally, I would list canisters by preference as follows: Miele,
Nilfisk, Lindhaus, Royal, Panasonic, Eureka, and Hoover. Look for one
with a 2-fan motor for best suction. The first three brands have
these on all models, the Panasonic on its top two models (MC-V9647 and
MC-V9635) and Eureka on its Europa and Excalibur canister models We replaced an aged Sears canister unit with a Eureka World Vac (Eureka
OEMs for Sears). Bad purchase. I wish I'd repaired the Sears. Obviously,
whoever designed the Eureka never actually _used_ it. Light in the beater
bar has _never_ worked, even after replacement, the beater-bar power cord
keeps falling out of the socket by the hose, and the thing can't run over
its own cord without tripping and rolling over. If it didn't do such a good
job sucking up pantyhose and cleaning carpets, it would be outta here
