QUESTION: The other morning I went to start my 92 explorer and when it started to
turn over I heard a pop and what looked like smoke coming from under the
hood. I tried twice more to start it but it just turned over for a
second and then stopped. When I raised the hood I noticed one vacum hose
at the rear of the manifold had blown off. I attached it and it started.
Closer inspection revealed that a rubber plug or cap had also been blown
off one of the other vacum fittings. Any ideas what may have caused
this?
ANSWER: Sounds (reads?) like the engine backfired through the intake.
With electronic ignition and fuel injection, this is rare, but not impossible.
A backfire can definitely blow vacuum hoses & caps off.
I'd check the intake manifold gaskets carefully if that were my engine,as well
as a very careful check for other missing vacuum hoses I had this happen too. The caps have "fatigued" over the years. So I went to
the Ford dealer and tried to buy new ones. The parts guy told me that they
don't make the caps any more for the thin plastic hoses and I should
"re-hose" the ford with normal hoses. Well, didn't want to do that, and after
some searching I found after market caps at Auto Parts warehouse.
