Vacuum cleanesr cord gets hot
QUESTION: About 2 years ago I bought a $400 Hoover vacuum cleaner. I recently
noticed that the plug gets very hot when I run the vacuum cleaner for
more than 15 minutes. Maybe this has always happened but I never
noticed it. The plug is so hot when I remove it from the outlet that I
can't keep my fingers on it for more than a second.
I realize this is difficult to answer in a post but how do I determine
what is normal hot and what is dangerous hot? Thanks.
ANSWER: This sounds too hot but modern vacuums draw lots of amps so it may not be.
It sounds like your vacuum is working too hard. When is the last time you
took the bottom off of it and cleaned all the crap from around the roller
and belt? That is where I would start. I wouldn't worry about it much
more than that if it isn't popping breakers. You DO have breakers right? I'm no expert on this subject but I agree with you
that the plug shouldn't get that hot.
The first thing I might try is to open the vacuum up (when it's
unplugged) and see if the motor area is dirty and clean that out. My
thinking is that if the motor can't ventilate normally, it's running
hotter and perhaps causing the cord/plug to be hotter. Also if you
open it up, is there anything lodged inside that doesn't belong. This
might be making the motor work harder causing a hotter temperature (just a guess on my part).
Last thing that comes to my mind is to have a qualified repair man
look it over. I know this is probably what you are trying to avoid
but I'm outa ideas
