QUESTION: We are currently designing an ion mobility drift tube instrument
coupled with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. A high vacuum (10 ^-8
Torr) chamber is included in the design. We are looking for a
reliable company (preferably Canadian) that builds quality vacuum
chambers. Since the chamber is a key component in the instrument it
is important for us to do business with a reputable company. Have you (or any one you know) had any experience with the vacuum industry?
Can you recommend a vacuum company that designs chambers? If so, were
you satisfied with their service? Did you have any problems?
I am currently receiving quotes for vacuum parts and the chamber
design, but your suggestions will be helpful.
ANSWER: The book SHOT PEENING published by the Wheelabrator
company recommends shot peening vacuum components
to reduce their porosity. You probably should visit a couple of labs doing drift tube work. Given
the money, molecular drag/turbo hybrid pump combos with diaphram pumps
for backing are the best choices I don't have any experience with Canadian companies, but in my experience,
the major manufacturers/sellers of vacuum equipment (Varian, Kurt J. Lesker,
MDC, etc.) all have facilities to manufacture specialty vacuum chambers.
They can make them to whatever specifications you require, although
you'll probably end up paying through the nose. If you design the
chamber well enough, you can probably find local industrial shops who
can make it for you, although you'll have to be careful to ensure that
they know what they are doing.
