QUESTION: I have one of those Eurekas that doesn't use bags. I thought it would
be so economical...but the prices they want for those little "sponge"
filters and the frequency at which you're supposed to change them means
that I might spend $15 a year on my vacuum cleaner! Does anyone know of
any filter alternatives? I feel like I could just buy one of those pine
green scouring pads and that would do the trick. Am I wrong?
ANSWER: those little stick vacs use a filter built into the cup chamber. but your
vac must be different. I have the Eureka Whirlwind. I do rinse the filters out. That's not all...on
the filter that fits on the back of the cup, I take a handiwipe cut to the same
length, and wrap it around the filter. Then I put it back in place. After I
finish vacuuming I clean the handiwipe and put it back on. If it's real dirty
I wash..but you can usually just shake the dirt off.
On the HEPA - you are supposed to replace that one about once a year but they
reportedly cost $50 or about ... so I did not replace mine. The filter has a
thin covering over it that wore off --- I brushed the dust off and it finally
got too thin. Anyway, I covered it with a used fabric softener sheet.
So far at least, the vacuum works as well as it did when new -- I think.
