Vacuum Retailer

QUESTION:

Many years ago, I found a wonderful website with advice on buying a vacuum cleaner, and I'm 99.99% sure I found it through this newsgroup. I believe it was an online retailer (I'm remembering a German-sounding name that began with an R?), but it had tons of very useful information. I need to find that site again. Any old-timers here who remember what I'm talking about?

ANSWER:

Possibly http://www.ristenbatt.com/
You could always try looking in the archives at http://groups.google.com which go back something like ten years. Alternatively, check the annual buying guide that Consumer Reports puts out.
I used such a sight when I bought a new vacuum last fall. Just tried to find it though and had no success. This site had good info on how vacuums work and dispelled several of the common advertising myths. It did NOT sell products or have any links to places selling vacuums.
FYI: The only useful unit of measure of a vacuums power is how much air it can move in Cubic Feet Per Minute (CFM). Good vacuums will publish this info. The apmperage rating of the motor (12 Amps, etc.) is meaningless. Fact is, most of the commonly available vacuums are largely junk. My experience has tended to support this. The thesis of this site is that a vacuunm should be treated as a major appliance purchase and that you should expect to pay accordingly. There are a lot of good brands out there (Miele, Ricci, Sebo and so on) but you won't find them at your local discount or department store. I bought a Miele (german made) cannister and love it. Huge amount of suction and I never have to bend over because it didn't pick someting up. My advice is to visit a couple of the specialty store selling vacuum cleaners and talk to the folks there. There's no comparison between a quality vacuum and the Hoover/Dirt Devil/Eureka junk sold at most department stores.
