question about vacuum sealers
QUESTION: Will Tilia vacuum sealers work with Baggies plastic bags? Seriously. The
real bags are so expensive, and I just wondered if for short-term (a few
months) storage they would work with cheap plastic bags. Baggies are only 1/2 cent each, and that "alligator" texture should be really good for vacuum
packing -- if the plastic is thick enough to survive sealing and if the bags
are air-tight. Anybody tried it? George?
Thanks, and best regards,
ANSWER: Actually the bags aren't that expensive if they get reused several times.
Multiple uses get the amortization rate way down there. I was gifted with 4 of the wide rolls and 4
of the narrow rolls plus about a dozen of the ready made bags the other day. My buddy busted his
Tilia and decided he really didn't need to seal anything anymore. I got all the accessories and the
the busted machine for spare parts in case I need them.
If you have a Tilia try sealing a Baggie, I haven't noticed them in the stores I shop in but I will
look next time I go and try one for you. I suspect the bag cannot take the vacuum or the heat seal
though. I used to buy boilable sealer pouches for my restaurants from a company
called Hantover and here's what I found online about them:
http://www.hantover.com/fs.htm I don't know about Baggies, but I can tell you Ziplocs will not hold a
vacuum. I think the bags are too thin.
