wet-dry vac--remove filter for wet work?

QUESTION:

Please excuse my ignorance... I was given a Sears Wet-Dry Vac but don't have the manual. Am I supposed to remove the filter when sucking up liquids? It seems that the filter shouldn't be allowed to get wet...

ANSWER:

Sears has 2 different types filters for their vacs...the one type you can leave on, the other you cant... guess I don't know how to describe the filters...when in doubt though, remove the filter when vaccuming liquids
i should add...the one type you take off, has a "sponge" type filter also, remove the paper filter, put the sponge back on..
Actually, if you look at the unit without the filter, there will be,(on most models), a check valve that slides up and blocks water if it gets that high. You would normally take out the paper filter and let this check float do its thing if you are pulling out that much water.
Most of these have a foam filter to use when wet. There is a paper filter to put over the foam (or in place of the foam) when using dry. A few of these have a pleated paper filter which works very well when using it dry. It must be removed and replaced with the foam type for wet use. Since it is a Sears product, why not go to http://www3.sears.com and enter the complete model number xxx.xxxxxxxx so you can see what type of filters it is supposed to use? This is the direct parts link and should show you everything.
