QUESTION: I just wanted to report that I purchased the Sears 4-in-1 Yard
Vacuum/Shredder/Chipper that is on sale. It is a 4.5 HP unit. It did not
meet my expectations as to vacuum power. It would not sufficiently pick up
a layer of long pine needles--especially as the 2 bu. bag begins to fill.
It worked fine in my driveway, but not so over the lawn. I returned it for
a refund.
I'm now investigating the much more expensive Billygoat. The homeowner line
of these units only have a 5.5 HP engine. Would that be sufficient? Does
anyone have experience with this brand? I need to vacuum and shred pine
needles, pine cones, leaves, and small twigs. A 1.5 or 2" onboard chipper
would be a plus. I know there are more powerful stationary units, but I am
interested in the "push" variety.
Thanks for any advice.
ANSWER: I just bought a Yardman 5.5 HP unit this weekend and I am very pleased.
Plenty of suction on my yard, even in deep leaves. I even used it to get up
piles of raked leaves. Also has a hose attachment that works real well for
getting under stuff. That took some time but it worked. Bag fills pretty
quick but it does have a chute built in so that itdirects clippings up high
in the bag so you do get full use of the 2.0 bushels. It is about $150 more
than the sears, which I almost bought, but worth it from your experience.
Plus, I bought a floor model and saved the difference anyway. I'm sure that
HP will yield different result depending on the rest of the design but mine
has plenty of suck.
